Abstract

Zumba is a dynamic fitness program that combines Latin-inspired dance routines with high-energy aerobic exercise. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of a Zumba Instructional Video (ZIV) in improving the physical health of second-year BPED students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. It considers variables such as age, sex, medical condition, body composition, cardiovascular endurance, coordination, flexibility, and muscular endurance. The study employs a quasi-experimental research design. A total of 40 second-year BPED students from three different sections served as participants. Data were gathered before and after the intervention to measure changes in physical health indicators. The majority of respondents were female and aged 18 to 20 years. Thirty-four participants reported having no medical conditions. In terms of body composition, 53% were within the normal BMI range. Regarding cardiovascular endurance, 39% of male respondents and 45% of female respondents exhibited good to very good recovery heart rates. Coordination levels were fair among 45% of the participants, while 63% demonstrated good flexibility. Additionally, 50% of respondents achieved an excellent level of muscular endurance. For the extent of effectiveness, the level of agreement was “Agree” in terms of autonomy and relatedness and “Strongly Agree” for competence. The pre-test mean score was 46.36, which increased to 49.12 in the post-test, indicating a notable improvement in physical health. The computed Z-value of -4.61 and a p-value of 0.00 confirm that the difference between pre- and post-test scores is statistically significant. Common challenges reported during the intervention included dehydration, muscle spasms, restlessness, difficulty in breathing, and energy loss. Overall, the findings validate the effectiveness of ZIV in enhancing the physical health of the participants. The results indicate that the Zumba Instructional Video had a positive impact on improving physical health outcomes among second-year BPED students. The researchers recommend that participants with medical conditions seek medical advice to ensure Zumba is suitable for their health status. Additionally, regular participation in Zumba may help minimize physical challenges encountered during the sessions.
