EXPLORING THE MOTIVATIONS OF DRAG PERFORMERS IN DILIMAN, QUEZON CITY

Abstract

This descriptive study explores the motivations of drag performers in Diliman, Quezon City, by examining the personal, social, and professional factors that influence their involvement in drag culture. Key drivers identified include financial incentives, career aspirations, passion for the art form, and the desire for self-expression. The study also emphasizes the importance of inclusivity, community acceptance, and the quality of performance as central to the performers’ experiences. Additionally, mentorship and collaboration are highlighted as crucial elements for skill development and professional growth in the drag scene. The study aims to recommend strategies such as support platforms, access to artistic resources, and the promotion of diversity within the performing arts. Using a quantitative descriptive approach, the researchers distributed structured surveys to 20 drag performers in Diliman, Quezon City. The questionnaire focused on themes such as interpersonal relationships, mentorship, collaborative opportunities, financial motivation, passion, and career development. The study also explored how these factors influenced the mental health and motivation of the performers, particularly in relation to resilience and emotional well-being. Findings revealed that strong friendships significantly enhanced resilience among drag performers, while supportive relationships with both friends and family were associated with lower levels of depression. The study also found that community involvement in drag performance demonstrated a curvilinear relationship with resilience, suggesting that moderate levels of creative engagement yielded the most positive outcomes for mental health. The results underscore the dual nature of drag performance as both an empowering outlet and a potential source of stress. This highlights the need for safe, supportive spaces and community structures that nurture both artistic expression and emotional resilience. Future research is recommended to further examine the role of creativity, mentorship, and community dynamics in sustaining the well-being of drag performers.
