Abstract

The study entitled “Assessment on Client-Merchant Fraud Among Delivery Riders in Novaliches, Quezon City” was conducted in response to the rising incidence of fraudulent activities within the delivery service industry, particularly with the rapid growth of e-commerce and app-based logistics platforms. While the digital age has brought increased convenience to consumers and expanded income opportunities for businesses and delivery personnel, it has also given rise to various forms of fraud involving both clients and merchants. These fraudulent acts undermine the financial security, safety, and trust essential to the efficient operation of the delivery ecosystem. This research aims to evaluate the prevalence, underlying causes, and consequences of client-merchant fraud as experienced by delivery riders operating in Novaliches, Quezon City. The main instrument used in the study was a structured questionnaire designed to gather data across four key dimensions: (1) the demographic profile of respondents, (2) assessment of fraud concerning account security, transaction security, and the security of shipped items, (3) identification of problems related to client-merchant fraud, and (4) proposed strategies to counter such fraudulent activities. The questionnaire underwent expert validation and pilot testing to ensure clarity, relevance, and reliability. Data collection was conducted with prior permission from relevant local authorities and businesses, and questionnaires were distributed and collected in person to ensure a high response rate. Collected data were analyzed using appropriate statistical tools such as frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and ranking to identify trends and highlight areas of concern. The demographic findings indicate that a significant portion of respondents were over the age of 25 (54%), suggesting that delivery services are primarily performed by mature individuals with possible prior work experience. The data also showed a male-dominated workforce (74%), pointing to a gender imbalance that may affect perceptions of risk and exposure to fraud. Furthermore, the majority of respondents were single (60%), which may reflect stronger financial incentives to pursue delivery-related employment. The prevalence of fraud in delivery services, particularly in areas like Novaliches, calls for comprehensive preventive measures. Key recommendations include stricter identity verification protocols, improved tracking of transactions, and educational programs to raise fraud awareness among delivery riders. Establishing mutual rating systems, enhancing cooperation with law enforcement, offering mental health support, and enforcing clear protective policies are also crucial in safeguarding both delivery personnel and customers while fostering a more secure and trustworthy delivery environment.
