Abstract

Public spaces, including busy commercial areas such as SM Fairview in Quezon City, Philippines, demand robust safety and security measures to protect both customers and staff. This study evaluates existing protocols and procedures for security personnel at SM Fairview, aiming to identify strengths and areas for improvement to ensure a safer environment in high‑traffic mall settings. A quantitative descriptive design is employed to assess the effectiveness of safety and security measures. Purposive sampling selects 100 respondents, comprising mall employees and security staff, to complete a structured questionnaire. The survey measures perceptions of vigilance, threat monitoring, feedback mechanisms, and promotional influence on visitor behavior. Clarification opportunities during data collection help minimize response bias and enhance result accuracy. Respondents were primarily aged 26–30 and 31–40 (each 38 percent), with smaller proportions aged 24–25 (11 percent) and 41–45 (13 percent). Males constituted 67 percent and females 33 percent of participants. Educational backgrounds included college graduates (57 percent), high school graduates (37 percent) and vocational training (6 percent). Respondents strongly agreed that access control personnel displayed high vigilance (mean = 3.71), monitoring efforts effectively identified threats (mean = 3.66), feedback mechanisms such as surveys outperformed those in other malls (mean = 3.71), and mall advertisements influenced their decision to visit (mean = 3.78). The findings suggested that SM Fairview’s security protocols were well regarded, particularly in access control, threat monitoring, and feedback integration. As a result, recommendations include enhancing training programs to maintain vigilance, expanding feedback channels to capture real‑time concerns, and leveraging promotional communications to reinforce safety messaging. These insights provide a model for other commercial establishments seeking to strengthen their safety operations.
