Abstract

This study explores the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the respondents, with a particular focus on how these variables impact their academic performance and overall educational outcomes. This study utilized a correlational research design to examine the relationship between socio-economic status and academic performance among fourth-year Bachelor of Secondary Education students majoring in Social Science at Bestlink College of the Philippines. The design was chosen to explore the degree of association between the identified variables without manipulating them. The study underscores the profound influence of socio-economic status on students' academic performance, particularly among those facing financial and resource-related challenges. The results reveal that students from lower socio-economic backgrounds often experience limited access to educational materials, technology, and support systems, which can hinder their learning outcomes. These findings emphasize the importance of implementing targeted interventions, inclusive policies, and resource allocation to bridge the educational gap and promote academic success for all students. The majority of respondents are between the ages of 20 and 22 (59.57%) and are predominantly female (40.43%). A significant portion (59.57%) reported not receiving any form of financial aid or scholarship, suggesting a reliance on personal or familial financial resources either due to economic self-sufficiency or belonging to higher-income households. In terms of academic performance, 55.32% of the participants have a General Weighted Average (GWA) ranging from 1.26 to 1.50, indicating a strong dedication to academic excellence. When assessing socio-economic status, respondents expressed awareness of its influence on educational outcomes, with a mean score of 3.23 reflecting recognition of the barriers faced by students from low-income backgrounds. Additionally, 55.31% of the participants come from families with a monthly income of PHP 25,000 or less, underscoring a significant representation of economically disadvantaged students whose financial limitations may hinder access to quality education.
