Abstract

The aim of the research study entitled "Significance of Parenting Style of Single Mothers among Senior High School: Towards a Guide.” is to know the impact of single mothers’ parenting style on the students' psychological flexibility. The parents affect the development of the child, particularly during critical times such as prenatal and early childhood. Thus, the development also involves the psychological flexibility of the child. Considering that psychological flexibility has six distinct elements: acceptance, contact with the present moments, self as a context, defusion, committed actions, and values. This study will determine the significance of single mothers’ parenting style in their child's psychological flexibility.

This study applied Descriptive Design and snowball sampling as the sampling technique. A sample population of sixty (60) senior high school students studying at Bestlink College of the Philippines, Millionaires Village, Quezon City, was involved in this study. This study used a self-made survey questionnaire that was validated as the data collection instrument. Snowball Sampling was used in this study; the data were gathered and distributed to the students who were available during the data-gathering period.

The results of the study reveal that the majority of respondents are under the age of 18 years old and under the General Academic Strand (GAS), with a bracket of 10,000 to 20,000 socioeconomic status. The most received parenting style that the respondents received from their mother is the Authoritative parenting style, which is interpreted as “Agree.” the problems encountered by the respondents regarding their psychological flexibility in terms of Acceptance, Contact with the present moment, Self-as-context, Defusion, Committed Actions, and Values are all interpreted as “Agree.” The data analysis determined that the parenting style of single mothers did not effectively affect the psychological flexibility of the students.

Overall, the researchers recommend using the authoritative parenting style for single mothers to effectively help their children be psychologically flexible with the help of the guidelines that the researchers crafted. This study can be utilized as a basis for crafting a guideline that will help single mothers gauge their level of awareness regarding different parenting styles, which may also help them to give proper parenting styles to their children and aid them in ineffective psychological flexibility. The findings achieved in this study would benefit the teachers, schools, and future researchers.
