THE EFFECTS OF ILLEGAL GAMBLING AMONG RESIDENTS OF BAGONG TUKLAS COMPOUND, SAN AGUSTIN, QUEZON CITY

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of illegal gambling among the residents of Bagong Tuklas Compound, San Agustin, Quezon City. Illegal gambling is defined as activities conducted in violation of local or national laws and regulations. The study utilized the descriptive research design. Through the process of purposive sampling, thirty (30) residents affected by illegal gambling and twenty (20) barangay personnel, totaling fifty (50), were selected to participate in the study. The instrument used for gathering data was a survey questionnaire, which was distributed to barangay personnel and residents. The data gathered were analyzed using mean, frequency, percentage, and weighted mean to interpret the data. According to the data gathered, the majority of respondents come from the age group of 18-25, with a total frequency of 16, or 32% of the respondents. The majority were female, with a total frequency of 29, or 58%. It shows that the majority of the respondents were single, with 29, or 59%. Most of the respondents are college-level, with a frequency of 17, or 34%. From the results of this study, it is revealed that the majority of the respondents strongly agreed with the statement “Illegal gambling has a negative impact on the safety of residents in my area” in terms of Peace and Order. Regarding Economic Violence: “Illegal gambling contributes to an increase in substance abuse and addiction within the community”; Psychological Violence: “Illegal gambling creates a hostile environment that negatively affects individuals' mental health”; and Emotional Violence: “Illegal gambling can cause emotional distress, leading to violent behavior.” The strategies proposed to prevent individuals from engaging in illegal gambling include encouraging families and social networks to provide support and intervention when they notice signs of illegal gambling, which can be effective. The results of this study show the effects of illegal gambling among residents of Bagong Tuklas Compound, San Agustin, Quezon City. The findings highlight the necessity for barangay personnel and residents affected by illegal gambling in Bagong Tuklas Compound, San Agustin, Quezon City, to find an efficient approach to reduce the number of people engaging in illegal gambling.
