Abstract

Tanods have been a recognized component of local governance in the Philippines even prior to the enactment of the Local Government Code of 1991. The barangay tanod, often referred to as a barangay police officer or BPSO: an acronym that may denote barangay public officer, barangay peacekeeping and security officer, or barangay police safety officer, represents the most junior law enforcement position within the country. This individual acts as a sentinel for the barangay, executing various law enforcement responsibilities under the supervision of the barangay captain. Tanods are considered essential first responders in the preparation for and reaction to various forms of violence, public disturbances, emergencies, and even disasters or man-made crises that jeopardize peace, order, and public safety. The researchers investigated the performance of barangay patrol security police officers in Barangay 171 Bagumbong, Caloocan City, focusing on their duties. The study involved barangay officials and barangay police, or tanods, to corroborate and substantiate the findings regarding the risks and sacrifices they encounter while serving in their community. This study will use a quantitative approach and a descriptive research design to assess the community's current level of awareness. A self-developed questionnaire will be distributed to a total of fifty (50) respondents, consisting of twenty (20) residents, twenty (20) barangay officials, and ten (10) volunteers. The survey will be conducted in Barangay 171, Bagumbong, Caloocan City. The results of the study show that most respondents are between the ages of 34 and 41, with a larger proportion being male. In evaluating the efficiency of the Barangay Patrol in Barangay 171 Bagumbong, Caloocan City, in areas such as curfew hours, manpower, and budget and logistics, the respondents indicated a "Strongly Agree" response. Based on the data gathered, the following recommendations are proposed:  Enhance Awareness of Curfew Hours: Curfew hours in Barangay 171 Bagumbong, Caloocan City should be clearly communicated, especially to the youth, to ensure their safety and protection. Violators of the curfew should receive a warning for the first offense. However, repeat offenders should face penalties to discourage further violations. Barangay patrol members should undergo mandatory training and seminars to improve their knowledge and skills in patrolling and community protection. The barangay patrol should develop and implement effective strategies to enhance the safety and protection of the community. A sufficient budget should be allocated to the barangay patrol, particularly for purchasing necessary equipment, including those required for emergency situations.
