SURVIVING THE STORM: THE CHALLENGES FACED BY STREET VENDORS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

This study focuses on understanding the challenges experienced by vendors in Phase 1, Bagong Silang, Caloocan City during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also aims to provide recommendations for enhancing their mental health and well-being in response to the economic difficulties and uncertainties they faced. The study utilized a descriptive research method, gathering data through a survey administered to 50 vendors within the study area. The survey identified the primary challenges vendors faced, focusing on aspects such as safety and security, service provision, and financial concerns during the pandemic. The analysis of responses revealed that the most significant challenge for the majority of vendors was financial hardship, which impacted their overall operations. The challenges faced by vendors were identified across three main areas: Safety and Security, Service, and Financial: Safety and Security: 23% of respondents cited difficulty accessing necessary safety supplies such as masks and gloves. Service: 32% reported challenges in providing efficient customer service while following safety protocols. Financial: 28% noted a decrease in revenue or sales due to lower customer demand and reduced foot traffic. A key recommendation is to promote a sense of community and mutual support among vendors through organizing events or initiatives that strengthen social bonds. The findings of this study emphasize the urgent need for focused interventions to address the financial difficulties faced by vendors in Phase 1, Bagong Silang, Caloocan City during the pandemic. It is essential for policymakers and stakeholders to prioritize the creation and implementation of support programs that will ease the financial pressures on vendors and help build their resilience.
