Abstract

The study aims to explore the relationship between various music genres and the cognitive functions of psychology students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. It seeks to determine how different types of music influence memory, concentration, problem-solving skills, and overall mental performance, providing insights into the potential cognitive benefits or drawbacks of music in an academic setting. The study adopted a correlational research design to assess the influence of different music genres on the cognitive functions of psychology students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. Data was collected from 300 psychology students through validated questionnaires and Google Forms. Regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between music genres and various aspects of students’ academic and personal lives, including study habits, motivation levels, and involvement in extracurricular activities. The findings revealed that engaging with diverse music genres positively influenced psychology students' study habits, motivation levels, and participation in extracurricular activities. Pop music emerged as the most preferred genre, valued for its upbeat tempo and stimulating lyrics that enhance creativity and self-expression. While the study found a weak positive correlation between cognitive functions and preferred music genres, further research is needed to explore this relationship in greater depth. Overall, the study highlighted the significant role of pop music in improving focus, creativity, and overall well-being among psychology students. The study revealed a strong correlation between diverse music genres and the cognitive aspects of psychology students. Pop music emerged as the most preferred genre, recognized for its upbeat tempo and stimulating lyrics that enhance creativity and self-expression, while Rhythm and Blues was valued for its soulful rhythms and melodies. Although a weak positive correlation was observed between cognitive aspects and preferred music genres, the study's p-value of 0.007615 indicated that cognitive factors were not the primary determinants of students' genre preferences. These findings underscore the significant influence of pop music on cognitive performance and highlight the need for further research to explore these relationships more comprehensively.
