Abstract

English is one of the difficult subjects that students encounter in school. People have different comprehension levels, and each has a strategy to understand English grammar. Learning English is a challenge to all Grade 12 General Academic Strand students in Bestlink College of the Philippines. The purpose of this study was to determine the challenges students may encounter and the strategies that can use to easily learn English grammar. Quantitative research was used as the research design for the study. This study utilized purposive sampling and a descriptive method to select 20 male and 30 female students as respondents who assessed the challenges and strategies in learning English grammar in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension. The study used a survey questionnaire as the instrument to gather data from the two groups of respondents. The male respondents obtained an overall weighted mean of 3.77, and female respondents obtained an overall weighted mean of 3.89, both of which were interpreted as strongly agree. Therefore, the difference between the assessments of the two groups of respondents in terms of the cited variables is not significant. The recommendation of the two groups of respondents are as follows: students should keep a dictionary, learn a word a day, engage in conversation, and use new words in conversation or assignments then learn it. Researchers should pay attention to English vocabulary to develop the challenges and strategies in learning English grammar.
