Parental Involvement: Its Effect on Academic Performance of Selected Grade 12 General Academic Strand Students at Bestlink College of the Philippines

Abstract

“Parental involvement” is getting an imperative status in the field of education. It includes different forms of participation in education and with the schools. Parents can support their children’s schooling by attending school functions and responding toschool obligations. Parents can become more involved in helping their children to improve their school works by providing encouragement, arranging appropriate study time and space, modeling desired behavior (i.e., reading), monitoring homework, and actively tutoring their children at home or outside. Home parents can serve as educators for the school. The research showed that the more intensively parents are involved in their children’s learning, the more beneficial are the achievement effects. The research method used in the study was a quantitative descriptive method to investigate the relationship between parental involvement and academic performance of selected Grade 12 General Academic Strand students of Bestlink College of the Philippines. Descriptiveis a relationship between two variables that attempt to collect quantifiable information to be used for statistical analysis of the population sampling. The purpose of using correlations in research is to figure out which variables are connected. This study identified specific parental influences that contribute to academic performance among 50 General Academic Strand senior high school students. In terms of parental involvement, financial support has an average weighted means of 3.99 and 3.85 for male andfemale respondents, respectively, which were both interpreted as strongly agree. Decision-making had the average weighted means of 3.89 and 3.90 for male and female respondents, respectively, both of which strongly agreed that decision-making is one of the effects of parental involvement. Monitoring students’ performance had the average weighted means of 3.87 and 3.90 for male and female respondents, respectively, both of which strongly agreed that monitoring student performance is one of the effects of parental involvement. The overall weighted means of male and female respondents were 3.91 and 3.88, respectively, both of which strongly agreed that financial support, decision making, and monitoring students’ performance affect the academic performance of the selected Grade 12 General Academic Strand students. Parents should know the school projects and activity costs of their children; they should also be aware of the cost of the school events. Parents should give their children allowance that can provide their needs for their computer rentals, projects, and assignments; they should also let their children make their decision to help their children. In terms of academic studying, parents should advise their children. To motivate their children, parents should be involved in their children’s learning process and monitor their grades.
