Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of WOBOPO, a workbook featuring poetry, in enhancing reading comprehension and vocabulary among Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. Workbook poetry, through its interactive and engaging activities, promotes deeper understanding of literary texts by encouraging active reading, critical thinking, and creative expression. By incorporating diverse activities that address multiple reading skills and accommodate various learning styles, workbook poetry enriches the reading experience, making it more enjoyable and meaningful for students. The researchers employed a quasi-experimental research design with a qualitative approach to investigate the impact of WOBOPO on enhancing the reading comprehension of Grade 11 HUMSS students. Data were collected using a survey questionnaire, checklist, and Likert scale to ensure credibility and accuracy. The questionnaire consisted of two parts: the respondents’ demographic profiles and a 25-item test. The Likert scale measured the effectiveness of poetry in improving students’ reading comprehension and vocabulary skills, while the checklist identified challenges encountered by the students. The majority of respondents (84%) were aged 16 to 18 years old. The gender distribution was evenly split, with males and females each representing 50% of the sample. Regarding reading comprehension, the highest-rated indicator was the ability to understand the poet’s intention, reflecting strong agreement among students. In the vocabulary assessment, respondents reported feeling inspired to explore new words and appreciated the careful word choice in the poetry. The data indicate a positive impact of using WOBOPO in developing both vocabulary and comprehension skills, contributing to improved academic outcomes. A significant difference between pre-test and post-test results further confirms the effectiveness of WOBOPO in enhancing students’ reading comprehension skills. According to the respondents, class interactions with poetry through guided exercises helped students become more confident in their analytical abilities and vocabulary. This increased familiarity not only enhanced their comprehension but also fostered a greater appreciation for poetry as a whole. Students found that using WOBOPO effectively supported their reading comprehension and vocabulary development.
