Abstract

Information and information literacy are fundamental to knowledge acquisition. In a digital world where vast amounts of information are accessible with a single click, the real challenge is not access, but the ability to use information wisely and ethically. To become lifelong learners, students must be capable of independently locating, evaluating, and responsibly applying information. Information literacy involves critical thinking, source evaluation, and effective time management. In this context, the researchers conducted a study to examine the relationship between information literacy skills and research skills among selected fourth-year undergraduate students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. This study utilized a quantitative correlational research design to explore the relationship between information literacy skills and research skills. The variables were examined in their natural setting without any manipulation. A total of 100 fourth-year students from Bestlink College of the Philippines, enrolled in the academic year 2024–2025, participated in the study. Respondents were selected through purposive sampling based on their relevance to the research objectives. Data collection was conducted using printed survey questionnaires, which were randomly distributed to participants within the library premises. The respondents generally exhibited a satisfactory level of information literacy and research skills. They demonstrated strength in prioritizing information but had difficulty in formulating clear and focused research questions. While they were proficient in accessing diverse sources of information, they showed limited engagement with available library resources. In terms of time management, students effectively balanced research tasks with other responsibilities but struggled to meet deadlines consistently. Critical thinking skills were evident in their ability to consider multiple perspectives, yet they faced challenges in identifying logical fallacies. Furthermore, although they were capable of evaluating conclusions based on supporting evidence, they showed weaknesses in assessing the methodological quality of research studies. The findings reveal both strengths and areas for improvement in the respondents’ research skills. To enhance advanced research competencies, it is necessary to address the identified weaknesses, particularly in time management, critical thinking, and information evaluation. Strengthening these areas will not only foster academic success but also better prepare students for the demands of the professional world. As a result, the study recommends the implementation of structured library orientation sessions and targeted training programs to improve students' ability to utilize library resources effectively and independently.
