Abstract

This study explores the waste management and procurement practices of Astoria Hotel Ortigas in Pasig and Novotel Manila. It aims to evaluate their current systems, identify challenges and opportunities in adopting sustainable approaches, and provide recommendations for improvement. By examining existing procedures, the research highlights areas where sustainable strategies can be effectively implemented to enhance environmental responsibility within the hotel industry. This study adopts a quantitative research approach using a descriptive method to analyze data gathered from hotel staff, particularly in the housekeeping and food and beverage departments. It underscores the role of guest expectations, management controls, and corporate responsibility initiatives, while revealing the economic and environmental benefits gained through effective waste reduction and sustainable procurement practices. The findings of this study indicate that both hotels exhibit a strong commitment to sustainability, particularly through initiatives such as recycling, waste reduction, and minimizing the use of single-use plastics. Despite these efforts, considerable areas for improvement remain. Both establishments encounter similar challenges in implementing sustainable practices, including the high initial costs of sustainable technologies and infrastructure, resistance to change from staff and guests, and the continuous need to comply with evolving environmental regulations. Addressing these challenges and adopting the proposed recommendations will enable the hotels to enhance their sustainability efforts and contribute more effectively to environmental conservation. The findings indicate that adopting sustainable practices allows hotels to balance economic efficiency with environmental stewardship. Such initiatives not only reduce operational expenditures but also strengthen brand image and foster customer loyalty. The study underscores the necessity of an integrated strategy that encompasses sound financial management, sustainable procurement, active staff participation, effective communication, regulatory alignment, and ongoing development to ensure long-term success.
