SNAKE PLANT (DRACENA TRIFASCIATA) FIBERS AS AN ALTERNATIVE THREAD FOR CROCHET PRODUCTS

This study explores the viability, effectiveness, and potential of snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata) fibers as an alternative thread for crochet products. As interest grows in sustainable and eco-friendly materials, the research aims to assess the practical application of plant-based fibers in craft industries, particularly in crochet, where durability and aesthetic quality are crucial. A quantitative experimental research design was utilized. Data were collected through survey questionnaires distributed to two groups: 10 BS Entrepreneurship students and 10 local craftsmen, selected through purposive sampling. The study focused on evaluating perceptions of the material’s durability, texture, and variation as a viable crochet thread. Based on the results of the variables, the BS Entrepreneurship students had an overall mean of 3.073, a variance of 0.448, an alpha of 0.05, a degree of freedom of 76, a t-critical value of 1.992, and a t-computed value of 0.689. The craftsmen had an overall mean of 2.525, a variance of 0.281, an alpha of 0.05, a degree of freedom of 76, a t-critical value of 1.992, and a t-computed value of 0.689. Since the t-critical value is greater than the t-computed value, there is no significant difference between the assessments of the two groups of respondents in terms of durability, variation, and textile. Respondents noted that while snake plant fibers may unravel if not properly secured, this can be addressed through proper crocheting techniques such as tight knotting. Both groups emphasized the importance of eco-conscious branding in marketing such products. Suggestions included using slogans that promote the sustainability and uniqueness of the fiber. The study recommends positioning snake plant fiber crochet products as inclusive in terms of design and usability for all genders and age groups. This approach enhances their potential for market acceptance and aligns with growing demand for innovative and environmentally friendly craft materials.
