Abstract

This study investigates the potential of coconut husk, an abundant and underutilized agricultural waste product, as a sustainable and aesthetically appealing alternative material for the bag manufacturing industry. The research is driven by increasing environmental concerns over the continued use of synthetic and non-biodegradable materials in fashion and retail. The aim is to assess the practicality, visual appeal, and market feasibility of using coconut husk in producing eco-friendly bags. The researchers adopted a descriptive-experimental research design, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. A structured questionnaire was distributed to a purposive sample of fifteen respondents, ten fourth-year BS Entrepreneurship students and five local craftsmen, chosen for their background in business innovation and bag craftsmanship. Data were analyzed using statistical tools such as frequency distribution, weighted mean, and t-tests to determine any significant differences in perception between the two respondent groups regarding the material’s feasibility and marketability. The results revealed that coconut husk presents a feasible and practical option for bag production, particularly when enhanced for visual appeal and structural durability. Both respondent groups acknowledged the potential of coconut husk as a sustainable material. The study also identified a growing market interest in eco-conscious fashion products and emphasized the importance of product innovation and design in boosting the material’s commercial appeal. The study underscores the viability of coconut husk as an alternative raw material in the fashion industry. It highlights the need for further development in terms of improving the durability, design flexibility, and aesthetic features of coconut husk-based bags. The findings encourage entrepreneurs and product developers to pursue sustainable practices and contribute to eco-friendly fashion innovations. The proposed use of coconut husk offers a promising direction for small-scale enterprises aiming to align business with environmental advocacy.
