Abstract

This study investigates the perceived acceptability of purple yam tea as a potential alternative to green tea. Purple yam is a nutrient-rich root crop, known for its high antioxidant content—including vitamin C, dietary fiber, and anthocyanins—which are beneficial for immune function, digestion, and overall wellness. Meanwhile, green tea is a widely consumed beverage and dietary supplement recognized for its ability to enhance mental alertness, alleviate digestive discomfort and headaches, and aid in weight management. This study adopted a descriptive-experimental approach to assess the perceived acceptability of purple yam tea as a substitute for green tea. It aims to explore the potential of this unique beverage in the tea market by examining its taste, aroma, consumer preference, product quality, and preparation process. The study drew, following conclusions:

Demographic Profile – There was an uneven distribution of respondents in terms of age and gender. The majority were males aged between 18 and 25 years old, with most being fourth-year BS Entrepreneurship students.

Perceived Potential of Purple Yam Tea – Both groups of respondents generally agreed on the potential of purple yam tea as an alternative to green tea, particularly concerning its health benefits, available variations, and consumer appeal.

Differences in Acceptability Levels – A significant difference was observed in the level of acceptability between health experts and fourth-year BS Entrepreneurship students, suggesting varied perceptions based on background and expertise.

Marketing Strategy Responses – There was a varied response to the proposed marketing strategies. Nonetheless, the majority of respondents preferred strategies that emphasize strong and unique selling points to effectively promote the product. The two groups of respondents assessed the perceived acceptability of purple yam tea as an alternative to green tea across three key aspects:

Benefits: The product was perceived to contribute positively to overall health due to its antioxidant content, dietary fiber, and anthocyanins.

Varieties: Purple yam tea was recognized for its distinct characteristics that set it apart from other types of tea.

Consumer Preference: Its aroma, taste, color, and flavor were seen as important factors that enhance customer satisfaction and promote relaxation during consumption.

The analysis indicated a significant difference between the assessments of the two groups—health experts and fourth-year BS Entrepreneurship students—regarding these three aspects.
