Abstract

This study examined the impact of police checkpoint operations on drivers under the influence of liquor, with a focus on Luzon Avenue in Quezon City. The area is known for frequent road accidents attributed to intoxicated drivers who experience drowsiness and dizziness, resulting in reckless driving, particularly on wet and slippery roads. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of police checkpoints in addressing and mitigating incidents involving drunk driving along this critical roadway. This study aimed to assess the impact of police checkpoint operations on drivers under the influence of liquor along Luzon Avenue, Quezon City. The respondents consisted of both drivers and police officers assigned to these checkpoints. The researchers utilized purposive sampling to determine the appropriate number of participants. Data collection involved personally approaching police officers and drivers in the area, with prior permission and informed consent obtained before administering the survey questionnaires. The researchers personally distributed the questionnaires to the respondents and waited for them to complete their responses. The results revealed that police checkpoint operations along Luzon Avenue, Quezon City, have positively influenced driver behavior and contributed to a reduction in cases involving driving under the influence of alcohol.  Under Policies and Procedures, the presence of checkpoints has increased drivers’ awareness of the dangers of intoxicated driving and the consequences outlined in traffic enforcement policies. This has led to a decrease in DUI-related incidents and arrests.  In terms of Enforcement and Apprehension, the consistent visibility and frequency of police checkpoint operations serve as a strong deterrent to potential violators, significantly reducing the number of DUI cases in the area.  Regarding Driver Perception, most drivers perceive police checkpoints as an effective strategy to discourage drunk driving, which has influenced their decision-making and reduced the likelihood of driving under the influence. The researchers recommend that police officers, barangay officials, community members, and criminology students actively support the implementation of police checkpoints along Luzon Avenue. To enhance their effectiveness, checkpoints should be concentrated in high-risk areas and conducted during peak drinking hours. This strategic approach will help deter DUI offenses and improve public safety.
