Abstract

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) plays a vital role in minimizing workplace hazards such as burns, cuts, and contamination in restaurant kitchens. In the food service industry, proper PPE use not only protects workers but also supports food safety by preventing foodborne illnesses. Effective use of PPE requires appropriate selection based on kitchen risks, consistent training, and reinforcement of hygiene standards. This study investigates the effectiveness of wearing PPE among kitchen staff in selected restaurants around San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, focusing on its impact on workplace safety and food hygiene. A descriptive research design is utilized to evaluate PPE effectiveness in kitchen operations. Systematic sampling is applied to select five respondents per restaurant, targeting chefs and kitchen staff. Data are collected using a validated survey questionnaire reviewed by Dr. Antonio Bermudez, which includes items on demographics, PPE usage, and common kitchen safety concerns. To ensure accurate and reliable data, researchers personally administered the surveys and provided clarification as needed, facilitating full participation and honest responses. The study includes 15 respondents, mostly aged 23 to 27, who acknowledged the significant role of PPE in maintaining food safety and protecting worker health. Commonly used items included gloves, aprons, and hairnets. However, several challenges were identified, such as discomfort, inconsistent compliance, and equipment wear-and-tear. Additionally, workplace stress and fatigue were cited as factors that affected PPE adherence. The results suggest that while awareness of PPE importance is high, improvements in training and access to quality protective gear are necessary. The findings affirm that PPE use is effective in enhancing kitchen safety and preventing contamination, yet full effectiveness is limited by challenges in comfort, consistent usage, and maintenance. Regular training, monitoring, and timely replacement of worn-out gear are recommended to improve adherence. Emphasizing PPE protocols, along with addressing factors such as stress and proper hygiene enforcement, can further strengthen food safety practices in restaurant settings.
