EXPLORING THE SERVICE-LEARNING EXPERIENCES IN FOSTERING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: BASIS FOR BCP ADOPTED COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Abstract

This study explores the importance of service-learning experiences in fostering civic engagement among students. Service learning plays a vital role in shaping responsible, community-oriented individuals by encouraging awareness of civic responsibilities and promoting active participation in community development. A lack of civic engagement can lead to negative societal outcomes due to diminished accountability and public involvement. The study addresses real-life situations that highlight the need for improved civic behavior and personal responsibility. By understanding the impact of service-learning, this research aims to support the development of meaningful outreach programs for the College of Teacher Education. The study adopts a descriptive research design to analyze the relationship between service-learning and civic engagement. Stratified random sampling was used to select participants, ensuring representation across key subgroups. A structured survey served as the primary research instrument. Statistical tools such as Slovin’s Formula, weighted mean, frequency, percentage, and the Likert scale were utilized to interpret the collected data and ensure the validity and reliability of results. Findings showed that service-learning experiences significantly contribute to students’ personal and academic growth by enhancing their communication and leadership skills, self-discipline, and sense of responsibility. These experiences also foster a deeper understanding of community issues and the value of civic participation. The study highlighted the potential of service-learning to prepare students to become active, competitive, and productive members of society. Based on the findings, the researchers proposed a community outreach program that promotes volunteerism, citizenship, and sustained civic involvement. The study confirms that service-learning experiences contribute to personal development, particularly in communication, leadership, and relationship-building. Respondents recognized service learning as a valuable platform for sharing knowledge, valuing diversity, and forming meaningful connections. Furthermore, service-learning activities encouraged civic engagement by promoting volunteerism, community service, civic literacy, and lifelong learning. These outcomes emphasize the importance of integrating service learning into educational programs to develop socially responsible and civically engaged individuals.
