Abstract

The English language is considered the international language that is widely used worldwide. Using the English language is one of the signs of being a competitive person, institution, or even country. It is also a sign of formality because using the English language is required in a business meeting, interview, etc. Using the English language is also required in research subject especially when conducting a defense because it is a formal activity wherein you are going to elaborate on what is your research all about in written and oral forms. As a student, we also encounter difficulties when using the English language. Hence, we conducted this research to assess the difficulties encountered by the students and provide some recommendations to enhance and develop English language skills. The researchers used qualitative and descriptive methods to determine and answered the questions, meaning, and perspective that could help the researchers in finding reliable sources of information in the current study. The researchers found out that the difficulties encountered by the students are divided into three indicators. The first indicator is output; students encounter difficulties when constructing a sentence in terms of writing an essay and a narrative report and making a research output. The second indicator is communication skills; students encountered difficulties when using the English language because their vocabulary is not enough to create a proper and formal conversation with other people. The third indicator is self-confidence; students are ashamed when using the English language because other people may laugh at them or either criticize them because of wrong grammar, which can decrease the self-confidence of the students.
