Abstract

COVID-19 was the name given to what began as a mystery disease known as 2019 NCOV. It is crucial to remember that viruses mutate all the time. The covid-19 caused schools to close unexpectedly. They are affecting over 1.6 billion children in over 190 nations. President Rodrigo Duterte announced the cancellation of classes at all levels. Higher Education Institutions transitioned from traditional face-to-face teaching to online-based instruction during the Covid-19 pandemic. Even though the country is in a state of emergency owing to the pandemic, education can still be done via the Internet. The purpose of the study is to know whether there are many negative barriers to online learning that students experience in terms of their academic performance, i.e., if the students are comfortable with the setup and the stability of their internet connection. The researchers want to know the students' strategies to survive and improve their academic performance.

This study is a descriptive research design to determine how online learning affects students' academic performance. Questions were formulated to guide the study. The study populations are the 2nd and 3rd year home economics major students. Through the process and purposive sampling, 50 students were selected to participate in the study. The major instrument used for gathering data was a survey questionnaire. The data gathered were analyzed using ranking percentages and weighted mean.

The Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education 2nd and 3rd year students participated in the survey regarding the problem of online learning towards academic performance regarding financial problems, technical issues, and devices. Most students have encountered a lack of materials needed in online classes. Students strongly agree that they used their gadgets to pass the activities during virtual learning. Some solutions to lessen the problem are to set the schedule for online classes and to have alternative options for online learning.

The results demonstrate the problems of students who encountered or experienced online learning when the COVID-19 pandemic started in the Philippines; we see the students' struggles with how academic learning changed. The school should know the effect of online learning on the academic performance of BTLED students and provide guidelines to improve their learning during this pandemic.
