Abstract

“The illiterates of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but rather those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn “- Alvin Toffler. This study is to know the effects of the non-mathematics major professors teaching mathematics courses on the academic performance of the mathematics major students. This problem has been going on for years. Many students took mathematics courses so that they can learn math deeply, but due to the shortage of mathematics teachers who are qualified to teach at colleges, the teachers are given subjects that are not within their specialization. Because of this, mathematics major students settle with the professors that were given to them.

The researchers utilized the descriptive method in determining the Effects of Non-Mathematics Major Professors On The Academic Performance Of BSED Fourth Year Students Major in Mathematics. Purposive Sampling is used in determining the respondents from the different sections from the 4th year level, 20 respondents per section, for a total of 40 respondents.

Results of the study showed that, most of the students agreed that their professor are approachable, that their professors allow them to express their thoughts in class, and their professors provides their own teaching materials and the students learned more in their MM15 and MM13 subjects than in their MM9 and MM13 subjects.

This study discusses the effects of the non-Mathematics professors teaching mathematics and how it affects the Mathematic major students’ academic performance. The findings of this study are utilized to identify the factors that could affect the students’ academic performance. For students to make solutions of the problems they encountered while studying. The main purpose of this study is to make a new guideline to make a professor suitable in teaching major subjects especially in the subject mathematics.
