Abstract

Connecting with friends, family, and colleague has become an instant in this advancement aged also known as Digital age because of the availability of different technologies around us with the help the Internet and mobile technology. In this generation texting is one of the fastest ways to pass your message, typically consisting of an alphabet and numeric characters between two or more users of mobile phones, fixed devices, or portable devices. SMS (short messaging services) it is the most common form of text messaging used today. A single text is limited to 160 characters including spaces. Thus, the primary objective of this

study was to determine the effects of texting on spelling proficiency of the Grade 12 students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. Since texting has evolved into a common activity that many teenagers perform daily. The literacy skills of students may be negatively impacted by texting, the researchers are prompted to conduct this study to gain insights and to determine the extent of the effects of text messaging on the spelling proficiency of the students. The descriptive correlational-quantitative research design was used this study to gather information or data from the respondents using a survey instrument. This method described the effects of texting on spelling proficiency among selected senior high school students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. It is composed of sixty (60) Grade 12 students of Bestlink College of the Philippines. Further, the researchers used the purposive sampling technique to gain insights

Based on the findings of the research, the following conclusions are herein presented: Most of the respondents are belong to the age bracket 15-20 years old. As to sex the respondents are male and female. As to strands they have six (6) ABM, H.E, HUMSS, ICT, GAS, and STEM. As to texting procedure yielded the assessment of “Agree” in all indicators as to words, phrases, and sentences. Among the indicators, words have the lowest composite mean that need to address. Further, pertaining to the spelling proficiency of the respondents in using texting. It is also revealed that the respondents “Agree” in terms of writing, reading, and speaking. Among these indicators writing is the lowest that need to address on how to improve it. Moreover, as to the significant relationship between texting procedure and the level of spelling proficiency of the students, it revealed that they are significantly correlated with the interpretation of very high correlation. Therefore, texting procedure has something to do with the spelling proficiency. In connection with the above findings, the researchers crafted a guideline on how to improve spelling proficiency of the respondents in using texting procedure as a way of communicating.
