Effects of Absenteeism on Academic Performances among Selected BSED Students in New Normal at Bestlink College of the Philippines

Abstract

Absenteeism is defined as bad habitual of the students who are not attending the class for some reasons. It is also perceived to have a big impact on the learning of the students because the more frequent of absences they acquired, the fewer lessons the learners would be able to attend in class. Now, the ratings of student absenteeism are 4.5%, quite high and increasing, and is highly observable in middle schools (Cepada & Grepon, 2020). Besides that, it is due to the unexpected arrival of COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the student’s attendance is very important for them to attain the learning which leads them to be more competent and successful in the class. With that, this study was conducted to determine effects of absenteeism to the academic performances among selected BSEd students in new normal setting and formulate guidelines to minimize absenteeism and improve the academic performances of the students. Descriptive method is the research design used in this study. Twenty (20) teachers who are all teaching Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) at Bestlink College of the Philippines, MV Campus for the academic year 2021-2022 are the respondents. Quota sampling techniques is used in choosing the respondents and the needed data for the specific questions stated in the statement of the problem. Printed survey questionnaire is the material used. Direct observation is also used for strengthening some points in the analysis and presentation of data. Try-out test is used for the administration and retrieval of the questionnaire. After collecting the data needed, the researchers tabulated and analyzed the gathered data with the help of statistical tools including the frequency and percentage distribution, weighted mean, ranking and Pearson correlation coefficient.

These results of the study disclose to the following: students have high attendance rate during face-to-face class rather than the online class, having difficulties to perform well during the online class sessions, and came up with the lack of engaging good discipline through their academic performance as to regard with their absences. Students having trouble to perform well in class recitation because of their missed-out lessons and shows that students were having difficulty in complying their activities. The lack of knowledge to the lessons has small effect on student’s passing score however, most of the students were highly observed cheating in Bestlink College Of The Philippines examinations. There was significant relationship drawn between absenteeism and academic performances of the students. Based on the result of this study there was challenges that students faced while dealing absenteeism. The study also revealed the effects of absenteeism on academic performances among selected students taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education. In terms of observed absenteeism, majority of the respondents answers that students attend face-to-face class once a week, they are lazy or busy to open their cameras during online class, and their shyness is a behavior that were highly observed. In concerned with the academic performances, the students were afraid of giving out wrong answers, having problem in complying school requirements and they have tendency to cheat during examination. Therefore, the study administered to help and guide the students attain a better performance in school attendance and comprehend that absenteeism has effects on academic performances. As explained by Conel (2020), absenteeism at school is a characteristic that affects students’ academic achievement as well as prevent learners from reaching life success.
