Abstract

Reading is the process of looking at a series of written symbols such as letters, punctuation marks and spaces with the use of eyes and people use their brain to convert those symbols into words, sentences, and paragraphs. While comprehension simply means understanding. Comprehension is a critical component of reading success, if the reader does not understand what is being read, the rate and ability to decode do not matter. (Addo, 2021). Students with a lack of reading comprehension tend to have a lot of struggles on how to summarize and get the main idea of the information. Reading is a very important skill that a student needs to develop. 

This study used the Quantitative and Descriptive research, where observation and questionnaires were used in collecting data and information on the factors that affect the reading comprehension of Grade 11 HUMSS students in Bestlink College of the Philippines, A.Y 2022-2023. The respondents of the study were the selected with the use of purposive sampling technique, fifty (50) Grade 11 HUMSS students.

Based on the result of the study, most of the respondents agreed that too much time spent in social media or playing games is the main problem they encountered in relation to reading comprehension.

The result of this study showed the factors that affect the reading comprehension of the selected Grade 11 HUMSS students. In addition, it helps the researchers to formulate recommendations and guidelines that will help the students to improve their reading comprehension skill.
