Vol.3, No.2
Abstract
Studies are very important in the twenty-first century, particularly how students can learn at their own pace. Some students experiment with a new study method which leads to having their own studying style and habits. Self-study allows students to learn new skills and improve their learning experience whether they are studying for a course or just for fun, learners are encouraged to further explore the topics that help them understand one another by practicing these study habits and this method of learning has an advantage which is the learners can control their own time and learn how they want to learn. While group study is having company and studying together by sharing everyone’s thoughts it can also help you gain knowledge with the help of others this another type of study habits are very useful especially for the college students and as we all know effective study groups can help the learners to understand deeper their learning material in more concrete way and by that the student may have self- esteem, confident, and generate positive energy that leads them to study hard and learn more about their course. Hence, this study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of group and self- studying on students’ academic performance among selected third- year students at BCP.
The descriptive quantitative research strategy since it used survey instruments and documentary analysis to gather information or data from respondents. The respondents of this study are thirty (30) students: fifteen (15) students in BSED (3101E) and fifteen (15) students in BSED (3102E) who engaged in group and self-study. The survey questionnaire was constructed to determine the effectiveness of group and self- studying on students’ academic performance. Purposive Sampling will be used in administering questionnaires to the respondents. The statistical tools that will be used for presenting and interpreting the data are the Frequency and Percentage, Ranking, Weighted Mean, and 5 - Point Likert Scale.
All the respondents were from third year BSED English; 30 students became the respondents, and as per the result of our study, both group and self-study had the same verbal interpretation of "agree," yet self-study has the highest weighted mean of 3.85, while group study has the lowest weighted mean of 3.76. It was determined that third year BCP students concurred that self-study is the best mode of learning and that with this learning style, the respondents can excel in their performance, learn new abilities or skills, and perform well on exams, whereas with group study, the students may be excellent at learning new abilities or skills but less so at performance and examination.
The result revealed that both learning styles are effective in their own ways. And we learned from this research study that students' awareness of their own learning styles is critical for them to reach their full potential. And with the help of the school administration, teachers, and parents, the students will be more aware of what learning styles suit them.
