Challenges Encountered in Virtual Learning Engagement of Grade 5 Students at San Diego Elementary School

Abstract

Distance learning is to deliver the learning using technology where the students and teachers physically separated from each other. At the time of quarantine, the only viable way is to continue learning online distance learning. As the Philippines, "Education must continue even in times of crisis, whether it may be a calamity, disaster, emergency, quarantine, or even war," said Leonor Briones, secretary of the Department of Education (Department of Education 2020).

Due to this learning environment, students’ engagement in virtual learning can experienced problems such as students don’t have sufficient learning tools, lack of supporting cost, student difficult to understand the subject matter, and low motivation and lack of communication. The researchers take the opportunity to know the problems of students in the virtual learning engagement.

The researchers utilized the descriptive method in determining the Challenges Encountered in Virtual Learning Engagement of Grade 5 Students at San Diego Elementary School. The researchers utilized the purposive sampling technique to those Grade 5 students who have gadgets only with a total of 50 respondents.

It was found out that most of the respondents have low income with a percentage of 50. They encountered several problems in their virtual learning engagement, and these are access of internet were the students experienced the websites and pages took too long to load with the weighted mean of 3.24. Lacks information where their teacher explains without screen presentation with the weighted mean of 3.34 and overload activities were the teacher will gave too many activities with the weighted mean of 3.38. Doing the assignment was they hardly finish their assignments in virtual learning than to face-to-face classes with the weighted mean of 3.46. Students' engagement in virtual learning is affected in class participation where I am not interested in what teachers taught us with the weighted of 4.12. For doing activities I can easily do my online activities with the help of internet with the weighted mean of 3.50.

The researchers found out the real problem appeared in each situation of the respondents. Students should engage to their teachers in order that they cope up the lesson and have good relationship to their instructor. Teachers should demonstrate appropriate behavior in dealing with learners. School administrators should have an engagement and motivation with content and activities and for the future researcher it will serve as a guide and references if pandemic strikes again.
