Vol.3, No.2
Abstract
This research aimed to identify the impact of Facebook on the academic performances of third-year Bestlink College of the Philippines BEED students during the pandemic. According to a Statista Research Department analysis, from 2022, online users in the Philippines used a variety of devices to access the internet on average for 10.27 hours in the third quarter of that year. Meanwhile, the daily average time spent on social media was 4.06 hours. Since pandemic strikes, Facebook has been one of the communication tools students used in participating in class.
Based on the analyzed data, it shows that the effect of Facebook in terms of communication, in research and social and mental health had a high impact. On the other hand, the impact of Facebook on academic performance of students in terms of physical health had a moderate impact. The benefits of Facebook on the academic performance of students, regardless if they were attending face-to-face classes or using an online LMS, had a high impact.
The researchers recommend that school administrators provide a training program on new strategies, methods, and techniques for supporting and improving their knowledge in learning new digital skills. Teachers may also provide new strategies, methods, and techniques so that the students can understand the lessons easily and participate and collaborate more on their discussion. Parents may also check their children’s state and understand them more to avoid depression and anxiety. Using Facebook, students could learn to raise their concerns especially if it can affect their grades. They should try to search for their assignments, projects or other schoolwork on Facebook. Additional research in this area might be done, taking additional factors into consideration.
