Effects of Stress on Academic Performances of Selected Grade 12 General Academic Strand Students in Bestlink College of the Philippines

Abstract

Stress arises when the combination of internal and external pressures exceeds the individual’s resources to cope with their situation. These critical years can also be undermined by depression, anxiety, and stress. Students who do not cope well with stress have an extremely drastic effect on their studies and behavior. The main aim of this study was to determine the effects of stress on the academic performance of the selectedGrade 12 General Academic Strand students in Bestlink College of the Philippines,S.Y. 2019–2020. This study used a quantitative descriptive research design that will elaborate the recommendations tobe taken by the effect of stress on academic performance. Purposive sampling was used to choose 50 General Academic Strand students to assess the effects of stress on their academic performance. Results showed that stress affected the academic performanceof the students in terms of attendance with the weighted means of 3.61 for male respondents and 3.76 for female respondents, which had the same verbal interpretation of strongly agree. Written exams had a weighted mean of 3.70 for male respondents and 3.95 for female respondents, with the same verbal interpretation of strongly agree. Performance tasks had a weighted mean of 3.93 for male respondents and 3.95 for female respondents, with the same verbal interpretation of strongly agree. Stress affected the academic performance of the students in terms of attendance, written exam, and performance tasks. Stress is the body’s reaction to a challenge. This research determined the effect of stress, thereby helping the students in finding a solution to their problems and helping them enjoy their schooling stress-and tension-free. Academic stress refers to the pressure related to their academics, including preparing for exams and class tests; completing schoolwork, homework, and project work; comprehending new concepts and terms; and making adjustments in a new social setting. Only academic aspects lead to academic stress among the students, but other aspects, such as environmental, social, and personal, may indirectly have negative effects on their academic career.
