Abstract

With technological advancements, a new macro skill: viewing, has emerged across various subjects. This skill involves analyzing and interpreting visual media, such as images, videos, and diagrams. It is essential to consider both the benefits and drawbacks of the viewing skill. On the positive side, viewing helps enhance understanding by providing visual context, improving knowledge retention, and encouraging critical thinking when evaluating multimedia content. However, it also has potential downsides, including an over-reliance on visuals that may hinder the development of other cognitive skills, such as reading comprehension and in-depth analysis. By carefully weighing these pros and cons, individuals can effectively integrate the viewing skill into their learning processes, ensuring a well-rounded approach to acquiring knowledge. This study adopted a descriptive-correlational research method with a quantitative design. Simple Random Sampling was employed to select the participants. The researchers developed a questionnaire based on the statement of the problem to identify the challenges associated with viewing as a macro skill in achieving English proficiency. The collected data were then analyzed to assess the relationship between the viewing skill and English proficiency levels of the respondents. The results indicated a strong relationship between the viewing skills of freshmen English majors and their English proficiency. The computed t-value of 16.29 was higher than the critical t-value of 1.984, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. As a result, the alternative hypothesis was accepted, confirming a significant and strong relationship between the students' viewing skills and their English proficiency. This suggests that the students' ability to effectively engage with and understand visual content has a substantial impact on their overall proficiency in English. Based on the findings of the study titled "Viewing as Part of Macro Skill in Achieving English Proficiency Among Freshmen English Majors at Bestlink College of the Philippines," it is evident that the majority of Freshmen English Major students actively utilize viewing as an essential part of developing their English proficiency. The indicators—observing, watching, examining, and interpreting—demonstrate how these students engage with viewing to enhance their language skills, thereby playing a crucial role in improving their overall English proficiency.
