Abstract

Physical disabilities, whether congenital or acquired, encompass a diverse range of conditions that significantly influence adolescents' experiences and interactions. During adolescence, a critical period for self-identity formation, physical impairments can profoundly affect self-esteem, primarily due to societal attitudes and perceptions rather than the impairments themselves. Understanding this dynamic is crucial for developing effective intervention programs aimed at supporting these youths. The researchers employed purposive sampling to examine the impact of physical impairments on adolescent self-esteem. The study involved 40 adolescents aged 13 to 19 years from three barangays: Graceville (25 participants), Kaybanban (9 participants), and Towerville (6 participants). Data collection utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative techniques, including questionnaires, interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings are organized thematically to provide a comprehensive understanding of the adolescents' experiences. The study revealed that adolescents with physical impairments often experience low self-esteem due to societal stigma, limited participation opportunities, and body image concerns. However, providing tailored support, promoting independence, and fostering self-esteem can significantly enhance their well-being. Data collected from 40 respondents aged 13 to 19 years across three barangays—Graceville (25 participants), Kaybanban (9 participants), and Towerville (6 participants)—highlight these challenges and the potential for positive intervention.  Addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach, including inclusive education, peer mentorship, community engagement, and mental health support. Such initiatives can help mitigate the negative impacts on self-esteem and promote a more inclusive and supportive environment for adolescents with physical impairments. Recognizing the profound impact of low self-esteem on adolescents with disabilities, the researchers are committed to providing targeted support and interventions to help these teens build confidence and resilience. Initiatives such as the Empower Ability program aim to empower teens with disabilities to acknowledge their value, embrace their strengths, and pursue their aspirations with optimism.  The Empower Ability program draws inspiration from successful models like empower: abilities, which offers social events, peer support programs, and informational gatherings to help individuals with disabilities live with dignity and participate fully in their communities. Similarly, the EMPOWER program at the University of Arkansas provides a four-year, non-degree experiential learning experience that teaches life skills and functional academics, fostering independence and social integration for young adults with intellectual disabilities.   By implementing programs like Empower Ability, the goal is to create a supportive environment where adolescents with disabilities can thrive, recognizing their potential and pursuing their dreams with confidence.
