Strategies to Improve English Language Proficiency of Grade 12 General Academic Strand Students in Bestlink College of the Philippines

Abstract

We chose English language competencies because it is the most common problem of students regarding English subjects. We chose this topic for some students that need to improve their English language proficiency by reading books, enriching vocabulary words, and writing English words, which will help them when decoding these words successfully. It also helps students to understand how sentences work and improves students’ English language proficiency. The researchers conducted this study to know the strategies to improve English language proficiency. A quantitative-descriptive method is a quantitative research method that attempts to collect quantifiable information to be used for statistical analysis of the population sample. It is a popular market research tool that allows to collect and describe the nature of the demographic segment. The researchers utilized purposive sampling to choose 50 Grade 12 General Academic Strand students to assess the strategies and improve the students’ English language proficiency. The overall weighted means for male and female participants were 3.52 and 3.93, respectively, both of which strongly agreed that reading books, enriching vocabulary words, and writing English words are the strategies to improve English language proficiency. Based on the findings of the study and the conclusion drawn, the following recommendation was forwarded to improve English language proficiency: practice speaking in English, answer the questions in English to discover new words; list down unfamiliar words; practice tongue twisters; and enhance writing skills, such as poem, speech, and other critical papers. Guides books should be used to exercise mind thinking, and they should download apps that can improve their skills, such as IQ tests.
