Abstract

This chapter examines the profiles of respondents and evaluates their competencies in various aspects of sports teaching, including skills, rules, techniques, autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The study aims to address the necessity for enhancing sports teaching competencies among Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED) students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. It recognizes that insufficient skills and knowledge among sports educators can lead to diminished student engagement and performance in sports activities.​  Key Competencies Assessed:  Planning Competencies: Involves identifying student needs based on demographic characteristics and selecting appropriate educational objectives. ​ Macrothink  Implementation Competencies: Pertains to the effective delivery of instructional content, utilizing diverse teaching strategies to cater to various learning styles. ​  Personal and Social Competencies: Encompasses the development of interpersonal skills, including communication, empathy, and relationship-building with students. ​ AASS Journal  Motivational Competencies: Relates to the ability to inspire and maintain student interest in sports, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment. ​  By focusing on these competencies, the study seeks to identify areas where sports educators may require further development. Enhancing these competencies is essential for improving student engagement and performance in sports activities. Implementing best practices, such as multisensory teaching strategies and a proactive approach to integrating new knowledge, can significantly contribute to the effectiveness of sports education. ​ This study engaged 50 third-year Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED) students from Bestlink College of the Philippines. Data collection was facilitated through a validated survey questionnaire, meticulously developed following a comprehensive literature review of pertinent local and international studies to ensure relevance and effectiveness. ​ PubMed Central  Questionnaire Structure:  Part I: Collected demographic and background information of the respondents.​ Parts II and III: Contained core survey questions assessing various aspects of sports teaching competencies.​ To enhance clarity and effectiveness, pilot testing was conducted, allowing for necessary refinements based on feedback. Beyond surveying BPED students, the study also included surveys of sports teachers and school administrators to gain comprehensive insights into perspectives on sports education and identify training needs. This multifaceted approach ensured a thorough understanding of the challenges and opportunities in sports teaching, informing strategies for competency development.​ The study analyzed the demographic profiles of 50 third-year Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED) students from Bestlink College of the Philippines. The findings revealed that the participants were evenly distributed across genders and primarily aged between 20 and 23 years.​  Training Competencies Assessment:  Moderate Effectiveness: The study identified that participants exhibited a moderate level of effectiveness in demonstrating sports skills and understanding relevant rules and procedures.​  High Effectiveness: Conversely, techniques and strategies were areas where participants showed a high degree of effectiveness.​  These insights underscore the critical competencies necessary for effective sports teaching and highlight the importance of developing a targeted training program for BPED students.​  The term "sport" encompasses all forms of physical activity that, through casual or organized participation, aim to enhance physical fitness, mental well-being, social relationships, or achieve competitive outcomes across various levels. Regular physical activity has been shown to enhance cognitive functions such as concentration, memory, creativity, and problem-solving skills. This study's insights are expected to inform the development of a comprehensive training program that equips Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED) students with the necessary competencies to become effective sports educators.​  Integrating exercise into daily routines not only bolsters physical health but also significantly benefits brain function, thereby supporting the cultivation of skills vital for effective teaching and learning in physical education.
