Abstract

This study examines the impact of public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers’ knowledge of traffic road signs in North Fairview, Quezon City. It aims to assess drivers’ level of awareness and understanding of road signs and how this knowledge influences their driving behavior, compliance with traffic regulations, and overall road safety. Data were gathered through surveys and interviews with PUV drivers to evaluate their knowledge and analyze its correlation with traffic violations and accidents. The findings revealed that a higher level of awareness of road signs contributes to improved road discipline, a reduction in traffic violations, and enhanced safety for both drivers and passengers. The study underscores the importance of continuous training and awareness campaigns to strengthen drivers’ understanding of road signs, thereby promoting safer and more efficient road usage. The study covered the research design, study respondents, sampling technique, instrument construction, instrument validation, administration and retrieval procedures, and statistical data treatment. A total of 120 respondents participated, including jeepney drivers, motorcycle drivers, tricycle drivers, and a traffic enforcer from North Fairview, Quezon City. The results show that the majority of respondents were male and between 34 and 41 years old. The assessment revealed that public utility drivers “Strongly Agree” on the importance of knowing traffic road signs in terms of safety impact, economic impact, and educational impact. The study found that the main problems affecting the impact of road sign knowledge among public utility drivers were inadequate awareness leading to distracted driving, followed by poor driving habits and insufficient knowledge of traffic rules. To address these issues, the researchers propose implementing a driver’s license points system to penalize reckless driving and encourage safer driving practices. Overall, the study recommends conducting mandatory driving seminar programs for all residents, with a focus on the proper use and handling of public utility vehicles (PUVs).
