Abstract

Traffic congestion is a significant problem that poses serious risks to road safety. In Barangay Talipapa, Novaliches, Quezon City, the growing volume of traffic has heightened dangers for both drivers and pedestrians. This study examines the impact of traffic congestion in the area, with particular focus on road safety concerns stemming from increased traffic volume. It aims to assess the effects of congestion on health, the environment, society, and the economy, while also exploring the specific problems it causes and identifying potential solutions. Participants include members of the Department of Public Order and Safety, the Traffic and Transportation Management Division, business owners, barangay officials, residents, commuters, drivers, and pedestrians. The study employed a quantitative descriptive research design and utilized purposive sampling techniques. The researchers first submitted a request to conduct the study in Talipapa, Novaliches, Quezon City. Upon approval, they approached the selected respondents in Barangay Talipapa and personally distributed the questionnaires. The researchers waited while the respondents completed the surveys, after which the completed forms were collected for analysis and interpretation of the data. Of the 140 respondents, 36% (50) were aged 18–25, while 8% (11) were aged 51 or older. Traffic congestion was rated as having a high impact on physical health (3.16), mental health (3.27), noise (3.28), and air pollution (3.39). It also had a significant effect on public safety (3.35). Moderate impacts were observed for stress (3.19), delays (3.13), and reduced business competition (3.18). Overall, the findings indicate that congestion in Barangay Talipapa significantly affects health, the environment, and safety, while exerting moderate effects on stress levels and the local economy. Commuters are encouraged to adjust their travel times or select alternate routes to help reduce congestion. Residents should be informed about the health and environmental impacts of traffic congestion and actively participate in improving traffic management. Drivers are advised to comply with traffic laws and adopt efficient driving practices, while pedestrians should follow established safety guidelines. Traffic enforcers need to be aware of the impacts of congestion to effectively enforce regulations. The local government unit (LGU) should utilize the study’s findings to develop targeted action plans, and further research should be conducted to explore improved traffic management solutions.
