Abstract

Parental separation can significantly affect the psychological well-being and academic performance of children, although the impact varies among individuals. As students transition into senior high school, they encounter various challenges such as academic demands, social adjustments, and financial stress. While some students demonstrate resilience, others experience heightened emotional distress, anxiety, or increased risk of academic disengagement. This study explores the effects of parental separation on senior high school students and identifies the factors that influence their capacity to cope in both academic and social contexts. This study employs a descriptive research design to examine the psychological and academic effects of parental separation among senior high school students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. Utilizing stratified random sampling, the researchers gathered data from selected respondents through a validated survey questionnaire. The study used statistical tools, including frequency distribution, weighted mean, Likert scale analysis, and Pearson’s r correlation, to assess emotional, social, and academic indicators related to parental separation. The findings revealed that parental separation had a significant effect on students’ psychological behavior, particularly in their beliefs, attitudes, and emotional awareness. While several students reported emotional distress and academic challenges, others demonstrated resilience and the ability to adapt. The correlation analysis using Pearson’s r showed a notable relationship between parental separation and various aspects of student well-being, including emotional stability, academic performance, and interpersonal relationships. The results emphasize the importance of providing structured mental health support and promoting open communication to help students cope with the consequences of parental separation. School-based programs, peer support systems, and the inclusion of families in decision-making processes are recommended to foster resilience and ensure a more supportive learning environment for affected adolescents.
