Abstract

Quezon City, with its complex urban environment, continues to face persistent challenges in public safety. Within this context, Doña Carmen Subdivision in Barangay Commonwealth serves as a valuable case for assessing the role of residential security systems. This study evaluates the effectiveness of specific home security measures—including security locks, lighting, surveillance cameras, and alarm systems—in preventing crime incidents. The findings aim to guide local authorities and homeowners toward more secure and resilient living conditions. A descriptive-quantitative research design was utilized in the study. A total of 100 respondents participated: 80 homeowners selected through simple random sampling and 10 police officers and 10 barangay officials selected through total enumeration. Structured survey questionnaires were administered and retrieved with a 100% response rate. The data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, and weighted means. The results indicated that security locks were considered the most effective measure (mean = 3.76), followed by alarm systems and security cameras (both with a mean of 3.49), while security lighting also received a favorable rating (mean = 3.22). The primary challenges identified in implementing these systems included reliance on electricity and internet connectivity (86%), system complexity (83%), and financial constraints (81%). Social awareness and engagement were found to be lesser but still relevant concerns. The findings suggest that while residents recognize the benefits of modern home security technologies, adoption is hindered by technical and financial limitations. A holistic approach to home security—combining technology, physical safeguards, and community collaboration—is recommended. Residents expressed support for enhanced entry-point reinforcement, CCTV installations, and stronger partnerships with local law enforcement. Future research is encouraged to explore long-term outcomes and expand the scope of community-based safety initiatives.
