Abstract

Computer laboratories provide students with essential access to up-to-date hardware and software, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and hands-on learning. These spaces support academic development, particularly in research and digital literacy. This study is grounded in Jan A.G.M. van Dijk’s Digital Divide Theory (2013), which highlights disparities in computer and internet access as well as differences in digital skills among individuals. The study aims to evaluate the accessibility of computer laboratory services for General Academic Strand (GAS) students at Bestlink College of the Philippines and identify issues that hinder effective use of these facilities in supporting research and learning in a digital environment. A descriptive-exploratory research design is used, with quota sampling employed to ensure representative data. A total of 77 Grade 12 GAS students participated in the study by responding to a researcher-made survey questionnaire. The instrument measured students' perceptions of computer accessibility and the laboratory’s role in enhancing their academic experience and digital skills. The findings reveal that students generally agree on the importance of accessibility factors such as computer availability, functionality, and user-friendliness. Respondents also strongly agree that computer laboratories support their adaptability, cognitive development, and technological literacy. However, a significant concern is the limited number of available computers, with 70.13% of students reporting inadequate access due to insufficient equipment. The study concludes that while computer laboratories are valuable in promoting digital skills and academic growth, limited access due to equipment shortages hinders their full effectiveness. Recommendations include increasing the number of computers and implementing a time-slot system to ensure equitable usage among students. An action plan is proposed to enhance the accessibility and efficiency of computer laboratory services, ultimately supporting a more inclusive and technology-enabled learning environment for GAS students.
