Abstract

English is the most widely spoken language in the world. It is serves as a medium of communication to express ideas, thoughts, feelings, and emotions both in oral and written form. Generally, English has five skills: Speaking, Reading, Writing, Listening and Viewing. However, speaking remains the most difficult skill to be mastered. It is this context that the researchers were prompted to undertake this study to determine the problems and difficulties in speaking English language. Hence, this research entitled “Problems and Difficulties Towards Speaking English Language Among Freshmen English Major at Bestlink College of the Philippines”.

Descriptive correlational-quantitative research design was employed in this study to collect information using a survey questionnaire instrument about the problems and difficulties in speaking English language. This study was composed of fifty (50) respondents who are freshmen students major in English using a purposive sampling technique. The data collected and computed through quantitative analysis.

The results revealed that the respondents are having hard time pronouncing the consonant and vowel sound in English language and incorrect stress patterns. In Vocabulary, unfamiliar words were not understood well and needs to consult the dictionary for the meaning. Lastly in Fluency, they need to practice speaking in English in their conversation or answering questions. For constant practice makes one perfect. With that, the teachers should give more assignments verbally like telling a few stories in English to the students and both need to attend or take English courses and group discussions for development and growth. The students must be immersed and watch English movies to enhance their comprehension, widen their vocabulary, and improve their pronunciation. Teachers must employ games and constructive competition related to speaking English and should provide suitable and interesting English- speaking materials for the continuation of the learning process.
