Effects of using Internet Search Engines on Students' Learning Among Selected Freshmen English Major at Bestlink College of the Philippines
Abstract
Internet Search Engines are one of the online tools that is prevalent in every individual particularly to students. Internet search engines are commonly utilized by the students to gather information that used for learning and academic purposes.
However, it is inevitable that students encountered problems in using internet search engines, thus, this study was conducted to determine the effects of using internet search engines on students learning among selected freshmen English major at Bestlink College of the Philippines during the school year of 2022-2023
Based on the study’s results, Google, YouTube, and Google Scholar are the most common used internet search engines. The uses of internet search engines in terms of school works are ‘’I used internet search engines used as a reference for assignments’’ and in research is, ‘’I used internet search engines to find references’’. The level of learning acquired by the respondents in critical thinking is, ‘‘It enhances my skills to analyze and categorize the data that I gathered’’ and in web searching skills is, ‘’I used different techniques or strategies in finding out the answers to my queries’’. The null hypothesis is accepted which interpreted that there is no significant relationship between the uses of internet search engines and the level of learning acquired by the respondents. The problem that is commonly encountered by the respondents in using internet search engines is “Finding an irrelevant result’’. And the findings were utilized in crafting a guide on how to use internet search engines to support student’s learning.
Based on such findings, the recommendations were made that future researchers, should consider carrying out similar data collection and obtain important data so that this work can be properly acknowledged and cited as a reference. School Administrators should allow BCP students to access the computer laboratory for educational purposes with an open schedule to all courses. Students, prefer to utilize an educational internet search engines that would help you to acquire educational information. Use internet search engines for school works and research purposes. Teachers, try to introduce some legit and trusted educational internet search engines to students in acquisition of data or information related to their school works. Engage students to different activities that can help them to widen their searching skills and critical thinking skills like knowing facts information vs. fake news. And teach students some tips about proper searching.
