Classroom Program on Study Skills for Grade 12 Learners: An Assessment and Impact on the Academic Performance in Physical Science

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Education's standards in the Mean Percentage Score of the learners is 75% in all learning areas for every quarter. The researcher introduced an intervention that will help the learners in achieving this goal through the implementation of the classroom program. This research endeavor explored and assessed the effectiveness of the intervention program, Classroom Program on Study Skills, for Grade 12 Learners of Porac National High School during the academic year 2017-2018.

METHODS

The descriptive method of research was employed. The personally designed survey questionnaire was subjected to the validation of expert professionals for improvement. Informal interviews were conducted to validate the responses obtained. Fifty-three (53) Grade 12learners were purposively selected and served as the participants of the study. The researcher personally administered and retrieved the survey questionnaires. Moreover, the researcher utilized appropriate statistical tools such as the frequency distribution, mean, percentage, rank, Likert scale, and t-test

RESULTS

Findings revealed that the means of the academic grades of student-participants during the first and second quarters in Physical Science are 75.34 and 78.53 respectively. The difference in the academic performances of student-participants between the first and second quarters is 3.19. It was also divulged in the study there is a significant difference in the level of academic performance of student-participants in Physical Science after the conduct of the intervention.

DISCUSSIONS

It was also divulged in the study there is a significant difference in the level of academic performance of student-participants in Physical Science after the conduct of the intervention. This only means that the intervention is effective in improving the academic performance of the students. Finally, conclusions and recommendations were made after the implementation of the proposed intervention program.
