INTRODUCTION
Reading Comprehension Skills play a vital role in the pupils' ability to understand the meaning of the words and passages in every lesson. It can affect their academic performance. When the learners have poor reading skills and comprehension, it takes time to absorb the information given by their teachers. After the administration of pre-test Phil IRI in Grade III pupils at Tambo Munti Kulit Elementary School, 17 out of 23 pupils belongs to frustration level. Project RACE, which stands for Reading Ability and Comprehension Enhancement, was created to enhance the pupils reading comprehension by having some interventions based on the priority root cause of the problem.
METHODS
Project RACE aimed to reduce the number of pupils belonging to the frustration level by at least25%. Survey method and a face-to-face interview with the parents was conducted to 17 Grade III pupils of Tambo Munti Kulit Elementary School. Four priority causes of the problem such as insufficient materials, no follow up at home, the limited allotted time for reading session and absenteeism was observed and given interventions.
RESULTS
88% of the pupils were reduced in the total of 17 pupils belonging to the frustration level, 63% higher than the target rate, after the implementation of the interventions given by the teacher.
DISCUSSIONS
The findings indicated that using short stories, having peer reading or reading tutorials by a big sister/brother, making a schedule for the reading session or using the spare time in reading, and home visitation or meeting the parents contributed to the success of the project. These interventions are suggested to reinforce the reading comprehension of academically challenged pupils.
