INTRODUCTION
One of the most eminent difficulties teachers face is teaching reading. Every year, schools strive to eliminate cases of non-readers. Different remediation programs, assessment tools, and other techniques were implemented yearly to help lessen enormous numbers of non-readers, but somehow, there are pupils who still cannot read.
CIP: MEMORIES Program is an intervention program specially designed for Grade One pupils of Punta Elementary School in the school year 2017 -2018 which aims to attain a zero rate of Non-Readers.
METHODS
Based on the initial Reading Assessment (Phil -IRI, passage Level 1) of Grade One pupils of SY 2017 -2018, 15. 18% or thirty-four (34) pupils out of two hundred twenty-four (224) are considered non-readers. Most of which are under the catch-up program (over age pupils who were transferred to Grade 1 at the beginning of the second quarter).
This intervention program is provided for non-readers of Grade 1 every after class: (a) 09:00 to 11:00am; (b) 01:00 to 03:00pm. Print materials like Flashcards, AbAkAdA book, Marungko, Claveria, and ICT related materials were used in the duration of the program.
RESULTS
After the six - month program, Post Test using Phil -IRI passage shows a significant increase of the Reading Ability of Grade 1 pupils in the School Year 2017 -2018. 97.3% of the said pupils were considered Readers while the remaining 2.7% are still in the process of improving.
The following interventions helped in eliminating non - readers: EACRe: Every After-Class Reading; SPARKS: Reading Habit before lunch; Peer Reading; Mother and Child Reading; Enhanced Reading Strategy (use of ICT -related materials)
DISCUSSIONS
Based on the conclusions drawn, the following recommendations were given:
Reading assessment must be done at the beginning of the school year to pinpoint non-readers;
Continuing EACRe: Every After-Class Reading;
Providing regular feedback on the progress of each pupil to the parent concerned;
Keeping teachers’ and parent's motivation in helping their children read.
