Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The CIP implementors came up with this as the main plan with questions such as: How many among the grade 7 students are in need of a reading tutorial? What are the factors affecting one's ability to read? What approaches and materials need to be used in teaching the students?

METHODS

The program utilized a quantitative methodology. It used pre-reading ability tests as the main instrument to identify students with reading and comprehension difficulty. The primary respondents of the program were the students from Grade 7 with a total of 1, 519. From this huge number of students, 19 were selected to undergo the program. The Philippine Informal Reading Inventory was used as the reading material for the pre-reading and post-reading along with the comprehension test.

RESULTS

The program found out several things that weaken a student's skill in reading. These are the lack of exercising one's strength at home, difficulty because of their mother-tongue, spending much of their time using their gadgets and some more. However, big changes happened based on the progress of their reading abilities reported in the said program.

DISCUSSIONS

As a conclusion, the role of the parents is significant in the success of the student's learning to read -from word recognition to comprehension in the mother-tongue. It is also recommended that students lessen their use of electronic gadgets.
