INTRODUCTION
Dropping out is one of the most common problems in the academe. It is commonly referred to as a student quitting school before he or she graduates. Alvaro (2016) stated several reasons why dropping out is happening in an institution. These include bullying, employment, and other academic factors.
This study was conducted to identify the causes of dropping out among selected G7 students as well as the preventive measures to remedy the problems. The researcher wanted to establish and apply the possible reasons for dropping out and the possible ways to lessen such cases.
METHODS
The study used qualitative and quantitative approaches. The qualitative aspect focused on the interview and focused group discussion among selected g7 students. The quantitative aspect included the correlation between the rate of dropping out and the preventive measure used. Moreover, purposive sampling was used in the study because only the students with a high chance of dropping out were selected. They were determined through their daily attendance.
RESULTS
Theresults revealed that the common causes for dropping out were the following: poor health, family factor, economic factor, and school factor. It also showed that these factors are interrelated to each other, meaning one would cause one. In school factor, it is revealed that the number of hours in school and lack of extracurricular activities were considerations in students' drop-out rate. Further, home visitation and counseling have the highest correlation with reducing the drop-out rate. Thus, the study concluded that these preventive measures were effective.
DISCUSSIONS
The results revealed that dropping out of students was rooted in many factors and the institution might do something about it. Home visitation and counseling are effective ways to mitigate the high drop-out rate that schools are experiencing.
