Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Absenteeism and tardiness have become a habit of some students nowadays that can lead to more serious problems affecting their academic performance. In this study, the researchers aimed to explore and to reduce chronic absenteeism and tardiness among students of Gulod Senior High School and to find an appropriate answer to the problem. It will help the students realize the importance of attendance in school and how to avoid being tardy. Students must complete all assignments, examinations, and other requirements in all of their courses. Absence and tardiness do not constitute an exception from such obligations, and students must be aware of this.

METHODS

The respondents of the study were the 70 students and 10 teachers from Gulod Senior High School, Division of Batangas City. The researchers used the descriptive type of research with a research-made questionnaire as the major instrument in gathering the data. A statistical tool such as t-test and weighted mean were used to analyze and interpret the data.

RESULTS

The respondents stated that the most common reasons for student absenteeism and tardiness were connected to the school environment and lack of interest in studying. The data gathered lead to proposed intervention activities to reduce chronic absenteeism. Results showed that there is a significant relationship between the student's absenteeism and tardiness and their academic performance thus reducing chronic absenteeism and tardiness is timely and essential.

DISCUSSIONS

The results demonstrate that absenteeism and tardiness can negatively affect the academic performance of the students whereas high attendance rates can improve student's performance in a variety of classroom settings.
