Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Absenteeism may take place when students or group of students choose to be absent just to hang out or without any valid reason and repeat these again and again. It is the aim of every school to lessen, if not eradicate, absenteeism among its students. One way of addressing this problem is to identify the causes of truancy. Once they are singled out, understood, and analyzed, these issues may be addressed with specific actions and measures. In this study, we focused on knowing the factors for absenteeism among students to inform the teachers and the students about it, to establish awareness on the adverse effects of being absent to these students involved and to help lessen the number of absentees and from having failing grades.

METHODS

The research design used in this study was descriptive -inferential design. The descriptive method was to describe the causes of absenteeism among Senior High School students. This further described the social interaction of the respondents. To determine the reason why they keep on being absent in class, the inferential research design was used. Twenty Grade 11 and Grade 12 residents responded to the set of researcher-structured questions.

RESULTS

Among all the causes presented, physical factors are the primary reason why students are absent from their classes. The distance of their houses from the school is the leading factor in this category. Personal attitudes, classroom atmosphere, health, and teacher-related factors reasons follow in that order. The least reason they have given is related to their home-related factors. The top reasons of student absenteeism are 1) Distance of house from the school, 2) Noise inside the classroom, 3) Not making of assignments, 4) Waking up late, 5.1) Influence by friends, 5.2) Preoccupied with household chores, 6) Headache, 7.1) Can't understand the lessons, 7.2) Uncomfortable classroom, 8.1) Stomachache, and 8.2) No money to buy snack.

DISCUSSIONS

The results have shown that decreasing student absenteeism is a task that will take all stakeholders working diligently on a problem to find a solution.
