Career Preferences among Grade 10 Students in Binulasan Integrated School, Infanta, Quezon Relative to the Opening of Senior High School

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Career choice is a truly challenging decision as this has a great impact on all aspects of life. This decision alone has the potential to open the door for success or close the door of opportunity. Students face the problem of matching their career choices with their abilities and school performance.

In relation to this, the researcher conducted a study aimed at identifying and analyzing the career preferences of Grade 10 Students at Binulasan Integrated School, Infanta, Quezon for the school year 2015 -2016 in preparation for the opening of Senior High School for the school year 2016 -1017.

METHODS

The respondents of the study consisted of 190 Grade 10 students from the above-mentioned school. The researcher employed Descriptive-Quantitative Method, while the researcher-made questionnaire was the main tool for gathering the necessary data. The data gathered were treated using Pearson r, percentage, and weighted mean.

RESULTS

The data indicated that the students' age ranged from 14 to 19 years old. The majority of the respondents were females with 91 out of 165 or 55.15%. Also, it was found out that students preferred Sports Track among other strands with an overall mean of 2.43. Seeking out information and advice from other people topped the influences or considerations in their preferences with 2.53 with a verbal interpretation of Highly Influenced. Meanwhile, the main problem they encountered was that they were not yet decided on what they really wanted to pursue.

DISCUSSIONS

The results revealed that Sports Track was the most preferred track among Grade 10 students. Also, the study revealed that students were seeking out information and advice from a variety of different individuals and looking for professional guidance and direction to help them with their career planning. The biggest perceived problems in relation to the opening of Senior High School was that they were not yet decided on what they really want to pursue. Lastly, school officials and leaders may continue to conduct a study/survey, assess and evaluate the needs, aspirations, and backgrounds of Grade 10 students in relation to the preparation of the opening of the Senior High School offerings.
